AANZFTA Upgrade in effect now

On 21 April 2025, an important upgrade to the AANZFTA (ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement) came into effect. This upgrade brings the agreement up to speed with how trade works today – making it more efficient, modern, and better suited to the way goods move in our region.

For importers and exporters in New Zealand & Australia, that’s great news. It means fewer barriers, faster processes, and smoother international shipping between New Zealand, Australia, and a number of key Southeast Asian countries.

What countries have ratified the AANZFTA so far?

The upgraded agreement applies to countries that have formally ratified it – currently (30 May, 2025):

  • New Zealand
  • Australia
  • Brunei Darussalam
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore

Other countries will join the upgraded version once they ratify it.

Why the upgrade matters

The original AANZFTA has been in place for over a decade. Trade in our region has changed a lot since then, and this refresh makes sure the agreement still works for modern supply chains and business needs.

What’s improved with the 2025 AANZFTA Upgrades?

Fewer roadblocks for exporters

The upgrade tackles common issues Kiwi businesses face when trading with ASEAN countries – including better support for multi-step supply chains, and reducing unnecessary paperwork and non-tariff barriers.

Faster and more efficient customs

One of the big wins is faster border processing – for example, perishable goods must now be cleared within six hours of arrival. There are also new, easier ways to prove where goods come from and clearer rules for service providers and investors.

Sustainable and inclusive trade

The agreement now includes commitments around environmental standards, labour rights, and economic opportunities for women – a step towards more responsible trade across the board.

Better resilience for future disruptions

COVID-19 taught us a lot. This upgrade includes measures to make it easier to trade essential goods quickly during emergencies, so countries like New Zealand can respond more effectively when it matters most.
