Grain de Sail is set to launch a 109-meter pure sailing vessel designed to transport up to 200 TEUs and 3,000 metric tons of cargo. The ship, equipped with three masts supporting 4,000 square meters of sails, is expected to achieve a remarkable decarbonization rate of over 90%. With a maximum air draft of 62.5 meters, the vessel can navigate routes under major bridges, such as the Verrazzano Bridge and the Panama Canal. Its retractable daggerboards will enhance upwind performance while maintaining minimal draft at the dock, ensuring efficient docking and maneuvering.
By optimizing routing and using sails, ships can alter their usual course to find favorable winds using satellite weather data. The Grain de Sail III will cross the Atlantic in around 13 days.
“With Grain de Sail III, we are displaying our ambitions and strengthening our leadership in the decarbonized maritime transport segment. To make wind-powered transport accessible, we need to change scale, and that’s what we’re about to do with a pure sailing container ship,” said Oliver Barreau, Co-Founder and President of Grain de Sail.
